ChatGPT plugin listing checker

Check a ChatGPT plugin or app listing before you submit. Paste the name, short description and prompts to see which directory searches you’d show up in, where you’d likely land and what OpenAI’s review checks.

What you get

  • The common directory searches your listing would show up in, and where you’d likely land
  • A name that wins more of them, within the 30-character limit
  • OpenAI’s listing limits and the review rules that catch most drafts

Free, no sign-up. Nothing you type is stored.

ChatGPT plugin listing limits

OpenAI checks these limits when you submit. The upload itself accepts longer text, so a draft can pass the upload and still fail at submission.

How to name a ChatGPT plugin

Directory search reads two fields: the name and the short description. A search term in the name does most of the work, and how much it helps depends on how many other plugins already use that word in their names.

New plugins with the search term in their nameIn the top 3In the top 10
No other result has it in the nameNearly every timeNearly every time

Term only in the short descriptionRarelyAbout 1 in 4

How to write the short description

The short description is the line under the name and the second field search reads. Use it for a phrase the name doesn’t cover: “Track invoices and payments” adds “payment” to a name that already says “invoices”. Skip slogans. “Work smarter” matches nothing anyone types. More on both fields in why a plugin doesn’t show up in directory search.

Questions and answers

Is the ChatGPT plugin listing checker free?

Yes. Paste your listing to see the searches it would show up in, where it would likely land, a better name and OpenAI’s review checks. No sign-up, and nothing you type is stored.

What is the character limit for a ChatGPT plugin name?

30 characters. The short description under the name also has 30, the long description 4,000, and you can add up to 3 starter prompts of 128 characters each.

How does the checker estimate where my plugin would rank?

It matches your name and short description against the live results of common directory searches, which Plugins Radar checks every hour. The odds come from plugins that went live recently: with the search term in the name and at most two other results using it, new plugins made the top 3 nearly every time.

Can I put a search word in my plugin’s name?

Yes. A word for what the plugin does next to your brand is fine, such as “Acme Invoices”. OpenAI turns down generic one-word names, names that add “MCP” or “Plugin” to the brand, and words like “best” or “official”.

Does the long description affect ChatGPT directory search?

For apps, very little. The name and the short description carry the matches. The long description still decides whether people install once they find you.

Can I change my plugin’s name after it’s published?

Yes, by uploading a new version, which goes through OpenAI’s review again. Getting the name right before you submit saves a second wait.

Is a ChatGPT app the same as a ChatGPT plugin?

Yes. OpenAI’s directory and docs now call them plugins; earlier material calls them apps. The listing limits and rules are the same.
